Windows 10 provides you with the PowerShell to determine the speed of your hard drive in a snap to install with no additional software for the opportunity. Read through our instructions.
How to test the speed of your hard drive

- Step 1: Start PowerShell by right-clicking the Windows icon in the lower-left and selecting ” Windows PowerShell (Administrator) “.
- Step 2: To determine the read speed of your hard disk, enter the command winsat disk -seq -read -drive x and press [Enter]. For the letter x, insert the respective letter of the drive under which your hard disk is located.
- Step 3: Wait a moment for the exam to complete. Now, look at the two values in the ” Disk Sequential ” column. The first is the actual speed at which the hard drive reads files. An HDD should achieve a value of 250MB / s here, an SSD a value of 500MB / s. If you don’t know what kind of hard drive you have, read our post about it. The second value is a speed rating scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being very good.
- Step 4: To find out the write speed of your hard drive, enter the command winsat disk -seq -write -drive x, where you replace the x with the drive’s letter. Then press [Enter].
- Step 5: Here, too, you will receive two values after the test. The same applies here as in step 3.

- Make a right-click on the Windows icon at the bottom left and then click ” Windows PowerShell (Administrator) “.
- Enter winsat disk -seq -read -drive x and press [Enter] to find the read speed. The x replace with each letter of the drive at which the industry is located.
- You will see two values in the ” Disk Sequential ” column. The first represents the actual speed of your hard drive. HDDs should achieve a value of 250MB / s, SSDs a value of 500MB / s. The second value is a speed rating scale from 1 (very bad) to 10 (very good).
- To determine the write speed, enter winsat disk -seq -write -drive x and press [Enter]. Again, replace the x with the letter of the drive.
- You will get the two values again, for which the same applies as in step 3.
