The Digital X digitization initiative in Cologne presented visitors with current topics relating to mobility, security, the future of work, urbanisation, and sustainability in 15 stages.
The around 70,000 visitors to Digital X on September 13 and 14, 2022, in Cologne received answers to these questions. More than 300 partners, over 200 brand houses, and around 60 start-ups presented innovations, solutions, and practical examples from the world of tomorrow – for the first time for private visitors. Over 300 international speakers, including Apple founder Stephen Wozniak and Jessica Alba, American actress and founder of The Honest Company, spoke about the various facets of digital transformation.
“Innovation needs inventors,” Steve Wozniak recalled from his time at Apple, “when I didn’t want to make big bucks but showcase my engineering skills.” He predicted that quantum computing would be the next big thing in Silicon Valley. “However, I don’t like looking far into the future.” Regarding mobility, he relies on quality “Made in India” and said that Mercedes builds better cars.

The topic of sustainability ran through Digital X like a green ribbon, in the brand houses, on the stages, and with the partners. It was carried out in a climate-neutral manner thanks to CO2 compensation. Jessica Alba encouraged the audience and spoke of an “unflagging drive, a hope, and a dream that people have every day – no matter where they come from.” She is convinced that people “are born with it, that anything is possible if you work hard enough.” For Alba, “hope is something great.” She wishes “that hope and this dream will develop into a better future, a more sustainable planet. We take care of each other and, of course, our planet.”
“In the last two days, we have shown the enormous power of partnerships. Digital X is taking a decisive step forward in digitization,” explained Hagen Rickmann, Managing Director of Business Customers and patron of Digital X.
The world exhibition of digitization made it possible to experience megatrends relating to mobility, security, the future of work, urbanisation, and sustainability live: a remote-controlled tattoo robot from Kuka showed how robots and humans could one day work together across national borders. If your stomach was growling, you could get vegan food from the 3D printer at a food truck. ByondXR presented in several stations how an online shop with displayed 3D products, avatars, and augmented reality (XR) becomes a virtual shop experience. The networked drinking cup from LAQA, which reminds you of sufficient fluid intake, is interesting for care and healthcare facilities. 5G creates the conditions for autonomous driving.
The Digital X Future Quarter was all about innovation. More than 60 start-ups presented their solutions in sustainability, health, individualization, the future of work, and knowledge culture/education. Visitors directly experienced digital twins via 3D scanners, remote customer support with augmented reality, digital smartphone clothing, or skin analysis at the booth.
The Digital X Awards were presented in cooperation with the Federal Association of Small and Medium-Sized Businesses (BVMW) for the first time. The Digital X Award honours digital lighthouse projects in medium-sized companies that use digital solutions consistently and innovatively and have improved their products with the help of digitization or developing new business models.
The concept of the event: network, exchange, and learn from each other in the sense of digital progress. The best companies are honoured with the “Digital X Award.”
